Longaberger 1998 Hostess Umbrella Basket Set. Probably one of Longaberger’s most unusual baskets, the Umbrella Basket was one of JW’s original designs. Tall and thin, the Umbrella Basket can serve many purposes in your home, including holding old-fashioned long umbrellas as well as canes in your entryway. With a solid wood bottom, the Umbrella Basket stands stably. With something heavy in the bottom, an Umbrella Basket can be topped with a small round glass tabletop to make a side table. Fill the center with packed newspaper and put a big fern in its pot on top, so that the pot edge is level with the top of the Umbrella Basket. Put in a thin pencil tree at Christmastime. Legend had it that Bonnie Longaberger stored her flower bulbs in an Umbrella Basket during the hard Ohio winters, so JW left a hole in the basket’s solid wood bottom to ensure drainage. Before that, it was available to all customers beginning in 1979. Longaberger used Classic stain on baskets until it was replaced by Warm, Rich, and Deep Brown stains. This Umbrella Basket Set was gently displayed, and both the basket and its plastic Protector are in good displayed condition.
